For cherished daily drivers, prestige vehicles and classics alike, decontamination is a preparation stage, not a shortcut to correction. Done well, it leaves the surface smooth, improves gloss and gives waxes, sealants and ceramic protection a clean surface to bond to. Done carelessly, it can introduce marring that then needs machine polishing to remove.

What bonded contamination does to paintwork

Paint can look clean while holding particles that have embedded into the clear coat. Brake dust and rail dust are common culprits. These tiny metallic fragments settle on bodywork, then oxidise and bond to the surface. Tar spots collect behind wheels, along lower doors and around the rear bumper. Tree sap, bug residue and traffic film add further contamination, particularly on cars used regularly on British roads.

Treat tar and adhesive safely

Avoid aggressive scrubbing. Tar can be stubborn, but pressure is not the answer. Let the chemistry do the work, and rinse the area once the contamination has dissolved. The same patient approach applies to adhesive residue left by old badges, stickers or transport film.

Clay is effective, but it is not risk-free. It works by shearing particles from the surface, which means it can create light marring, especially on softer clear coats or darker colours. That marring is often correctable during a polish, but it is better not to create it unnecessarily.

For paint that will be machine polished afterwards, a fine-grade clay mitt or towel can be an efficient choice. For a well-kept car that only needs protection, a soft fine clay bar used carefully may offer more control. Avoid aggressive or heavy-grade clay unless you are addressing severe contamination and understand that polishing will likely follow.

The correct clay technique

Use plenty of dedicated clay lubricant. The panel should remain visibly wet throughout the process. Work one small section at a time, using almost no pressure and moving the clay in straight, overlapping passes. You are feeling for the surface to become smooth, not trying to force the clay through resistance.

Wipe the area with a clean microfibre towel and check the finish before moving on. If the clay catches, stop and add more lubricant. A contaminated or dropped clay bar must not go back on the paint. Discard it, because particles picked up from the ground can scratch a panel instantly.

Clay mitts and towels are reusable, but they still need frequent rinsing. They are quicker over larger vehicles and can be a sensible option for regular maintenance, provided the paint is well lubricated and the user understands the potential for marring.

Rinse, dry and inspect before protection

Once the decontamination process is complete, give the vehicle a final rinse to remove chemical residue and remaining lubricant. Dry using clean, high-quality microfibre drying towels, ideally with a drying aid if it suits the protection already on the vehicle. Pat and glide rather than grinding the towel into the paint.

Now inspect the finish in good lighting. Natural daylight can reveal overall clarity, while an inspection light will expose swirls, water spotting and clay marring that may not be obvious otherwise. Decontamination removes contamination. It does not remove scratches, oxidation, etched bird droppings or deeper paint defects.

If the paint now looks clear but has light wash marks, a single-stage enhancement polish may be the right next step before protection. Common mistakes that compromise a good finish
